Not Another Day

Author: Kim R. Brewer
Average review score:

Inspired!
This book has changed my entire perspective of making changes in my life. I believe that too many of us, believers in God or not, don't respond quick enough and have enough faith in ourselves to change the direction in which are lives are leading.
Although this book is scripturally based and designed for Christians, I personally see lots of practical information with biblical support for ANYBODY who needs a new perspective and an opportunity to seek new direction. I learned that you must shut the door to the old before you open the door to the new. This book is a must have for ANYBODY who has come to the point of saying "Not Another Day"

Nourishment for the Soul
This book was truly a blessing. From the first page to the last, every page hit home and touched on all the issues day to day life can bring. Spiritual nourishment for the soul straight from the heavenly kitchen. Every subject written in plain english, easy to understand, with realistic application. My soul rejoiced! God's word has never been easier to understand and apply.
Reverend Brewer is an annointed woman of God. Her writing is to the point, personal, and supported by scripture. Her testimonies take this book to another level. She is living proof of God's grace and mercy. Not Another Day!

AWESOME & ANNOINTED
WHAT CAN ONE SAY ABOUT A BOOK THAT WAS WRITTEN WITH SO MUCH LOVE,PAIN AND ANNOINTING!? IF YOU EVER BEEN THRU SOMETHING, AND JUST COULDNT TAKE IT ANOTHER DAY, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU, THIS BOOK, HAS CHANGED MY LIFE AND I KNOW AFTER READING IT, I WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!"NOT ANOTHER DAY"

Once in a Lifetime
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (November, 1994)
Author: Constance O'Day-Flannery
Average review score:

A Once in a lifetime read.
I found this book 5 years ago. I have read it 4 times. Ms. O'Day-Flannery hits the bullseye. Forty-something women finding herself with no husband after 20 years of marriage and dedication to her family. She caught the essence of feelings, hopes and dreams. Mine at least. I believe my guardian angel lead me to this book. I want to thank the author for giving hope, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Each time I read it, there is something more I learn about myself and Maureen. Thank you.

Remember her name, the books are fabulouse for true romantic
I discovered Flannery years ago via a friend. If you want some romance, intrigue and fantasy for a respite from the awful day's hectic rat race, cut off the phone, get in your pj's,some popcorn and dream along with the BEST writer to melt time, space and hopefulness and LOVE into one heck of a good read, yet you will be wistfully waiting in your day dreams for a man just like you heard it could be. Your prince has arrived, yet worth the work to nab 'im. A author definitely needing to have her books come to us in film formulation.

great read
If you'd like to read a great "go to the rescue ghost story" and have a laugh. This is the book for you. When Maureen first realises she was being haunted she was really scared. She went from scared to falling in love all over again with the ghost. Leaping in and out of her own past she relives certain parts of her youth. Telling her teenage friends about sex was one of the funny parts. Then finding out at the reunion that she really had told them (and therefore had really travelled in time). She finally finds herself in the end and can then start a new life with out feeling guilty about her (ex-)husband or about her lost love (the ghost).

One Day Closer to Death: Eight Stabs at Immortality
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 1998)
Author: Bradley Denton
Average review score:

A pleasure to read.
In his introduction to "The Territory," the opening story of One Day Closer to Death, author Bradley Denton states:

"The greatest moment in all of American literature occurs in chapter 31 of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when Huck says--- 'All right then, I'll go to hell.' And he tears up a certain piece of paper." *

*A letter he had written to Jim's owner, Mrs. Watson, revealing Jim's whereabouts.

Later, Denton says that that moment set the "literary high bar" for him as a writer, that henceforth his goal would be to give readers the same kind of epiphany he felt when Huck made his decision.

If you've read Denton's novels, you know that he usually meets this lofty goal. One Day Closer to Death, featuring seven previously published stories and one new novella, proves he also meets this standard in his shorter work. Composed of various milestones from his thirteen-year career, each story contains characters who face personal hells, some forced on them by circumstance, others self created.

The collection's strongest stories are three novellas, "The Territory", "The Calvin Coolidge Home for Dead Comedians", and "Blackburn Bakes Cookies". "The Territory" (an alternate history that will surprise readers who think Howard Waldrop holds exclusive rights to this type of story), relates young Sam Clemens' experiences as a member of Quantrill's raiders, and the choice he is forced to make when that savage band decides to invade the abolitionist stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas. "The Calvin Coolidge Home for Dead Comedians", features the controversial Lenny Bruce, who, after his tawdry death, discovers that the line between heaven and hell is very thin. "Blackburn Bakes Cookies", provides a fitting epitaph to the Jimmy Blackburn saga. Although not physically present (unless you count his ashes), Blackburn's presence pervades this twisted tale of family ties and hero worship.

Rounding out the collection are "Skidmore" (wherein the ghost of a serial killer accompanies the story's narrator on a grim trek), "Killing Weeds" (a story of the continuing ravages of the Vietnam War), "Captain Coyote's Last Hunt" (in which a sadistic hunter gets his comeuppance from the Trickster himself), "We Love Lydia Love", (a tale of obsessive love and self destruction which could have easily come out of Ellison's "Love Ain't Nothing But Sex Misspelled"), and "A Conflagration Artist" (about a woman shares her personal tragedy with others via combustible performance art).

The stories are arranged chronologically, so readers can, in Denton's words, "see his evolution as a writer". They show an author constantly refining his gifts, constantly improving, constantly pushing literary boundaries. At once sad and funny, lyrical and prickly, One Day Closer to Death demonstrates Denton's formidable talent, and attests to the ever increasing depth of his perceptive and beguiling work.

Absolutely Wonderful
Dentan is one of the great humorists at present working in American letters. He has not published anything (to my knowledge)that is not worth reading. I got this book as a Christmas present and stayed up until the wee hours of Boxing Day to finish it. It is simply super writing. Do yourself a favor and get this book and, while you're at it, check his earlier work out too. You will thank yourself for the treat.

A Whitman's Sampler of literary confections
Filled with unique tales, off-beat humor, memorable characters, and skillful writing, "One Day Closer To Death" is a Whitman's Sampler of literary confections. And, though tours of his home will be discouraged, Bradley Denton should be declared a state treasure. (copyright 1998, San Antonio Express-News)

Dr. Shaler's writing style is like having a conversation with a trusted friend. Her book is my morning coffee time companion. I've read the book from cover to cover and implemented many of the suggestions for creating positive change. I liked the outcomes so much I've started at the beginning again.

I encourage you to get a copy as a gift for yourself. You will thank yourself a million times over.

very practical, very wise
i love this book! i have read this book from cover to cover a few times now and i still pick it up and read a page or two everytime it's within arms reach. every time i do it drives home how appropriate the subtitle is...practical wisdom for optimal living! it reminds me of 'the handbook to higher consciousness' in the sense that one can open it to any page and find words of wisdom from a plethora of sources that touches them on a deeper level.

Optimize Your Day! Takes the wisdom thing one step further by offering practical exercises that assist the reader in breaking out of old, uninspired mindsets to chart a new path for ones personal journey.

i really do love this book, from the easy to handle 6" x 6" format to the use of quotes to begin each section. Who would have thought that the words of William Shakespeare, Kenny Rogers and Zig Ziglar (to name but a few) would make it into the same book and not look out of place!?

This book would make a great gift...particularly for yourself!

Original 365 Dogs Page-A-Day Calendar 2002

365 dogs page-a-day calendar
great pictures of all sorts of happy and goofy dogs, one for every day. And, since i just couldn't bear to throw out any of the photos, I brought them in to work for scrap paper. They were a huge hit with staff! How could you be cranky on the phone when the scrap paper has a goofy, silly, sweet dog on it! I have been faithfully getting this calendar since 1995, no matter what the cost.

A calendar for all dog lovers everywhere
Once again the 365 Dogs calendar is a joy to have and to look through, with dogs of every description in all sorts of poses, one for each day of the year, each with its own snappy commentary. A great gift for dog lovers of all ages.

ordinary dogs become a star for a day
The great charm of this calendar is that the photos are provided by amateurs of their pet dogs. The range of dogs is huge with scruffy mixed mutts sharing the limelight with coiffured canine aristocrats. Each day there is the addition of some interesting information on dogs. The best feature is 365 different dogs, one for each day of the year and what dog lover could resist that?

Pasta: Every Way for Every Day
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Eric Treuille, Anna Del Conte, and Anna Del Conte
Average review score:

Best Pasta Cookbook!
Do you like pasta? Then buy this book! I was looking for a book by Anna Del Conte and decided to try this one. Boy, am I glad I did. It's the best cookbook I own. The authors give basic instructions on such things as making "perfectly cooked pasta every time," and there is an endless number of easy, delicious recipes that also tell you which pasta to use and what can be done in advance. The "at a glance" format makes it so easy to quickly navigate through this book. And there's so much more! You will treasure this book.

Fantastic book
I'm a good cook, and love to make more complex meals, but this book has basic great recipes - - while some are more complex, this is the best pasta book I've seen that can point you to ingredients you likely already have in your pantry, and help you to whip up something wonderful. Haven't been disappointed in a recipe yet, and have bought this book for a few friends who are still in the beginner to intermediate stages of loving to cook, and they all love it. Bottom line is that the recipes are great.

My Favorite Pasta Recipe Book
I love this book! I learned to cook pasta from my husband's Italian mother and grandmother and I thought I was doing well, but this book has refined and simplified my pasta dishes. The book is easy to read and easy to use with step-by-step directions. After making one of the tomato based sauces, my husband said it was the best he'd ever had! There are recipes for every type of pasta, too, using seafood (my favorite), herbs and oils, and cheese. Fresh pasta, store bought, how to cook it...whether you've been cooking pasta all your life or just learning how this book is perfect. The pictures alone make it worth while. I, also, purchased the author's Ultimate Bread book and love it as much as this one.

well worth the $
The poet writes with a confident, authentic and accessible voice.
In this book, you'll find equally skillful free verse and formal verse. Gems include "Shoplifting", "Reading With Mira", and "Rehab".

In addition to poetry, the book contains essays on the writing and publishing life, thoughts on the impact of the internet on poetry, valuable links to poetry sites on the web, and reflections on self-publishing.

This is a book that should appeal to poets at the beginning stages of the submitting/publishing game, as well as to seasoned poets, and to anyone who is looking for well-crafted poetry to read.

Profitable Child Care: How to Start and Run a Successful Business
Published in Hardcover by Checkmark Books (October, 1993)
Authors: Nan Lee Howkins and Heidi Kane Rosenholtz (Contributor)
Average review score:

Great Resource
There are very, very few books on starting and operating a for-profit child care business (believe me, I have looked!). This one is a gem; very well written by a person who has been there. Her flexible time system is right-on, although I'm not sure I'd have the guts to implement it. Margins are thin in this business; this book should help you get all you can out of it.

Comprehensive, well written, in-depth guide. Excellent
This is an excellent source book for anyone considering opening a child care center. It is comprehensive, well written and logically organised. The author covers every area of developing a center, from organisation of the space to conflict resolution to highlighting the ten most common mistakes in running a center. I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone considering starting a business in child care.

Excellent detailing of starting up & managing child care ctr
The authors covered all aspects of startup from location and economics in your area to business plan examples. Showed implementation of their "flex-time" programming which is wonderful. I checked this book out of the library and two days later (after I finished it) I went out and bought it. It will be used over and over I am sure.

The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days (The Publishing Game)
Published in Paperback by Peanut Butter and Jelly Press, LLC (April, 2003)
Author: Fern Reiss
Average review score:

Excellent book on self-publishing
This is one of three books titled "The Publishing Game". Each of the books sets itself apart from the others by the subtitles "Publish a Book in 30 Days", "Finding an Agent in 30 Days", and "Bestseller in 30 Days". Taken together they are a comprehensive set of instructional resources for everything you might want to know to get your book published and marketed.

The areas covered in "Publish a Book in 30 Days" include deciding to self-publish, hot topics for publishing, choosing a title, setting a book's price, writing a business plan, choosing a company name, the legal structure of your company, getting an ISBN, filling out an ABI, discount schedules, planning for the future, creating a website, ordering a barcode, copyrighting, advance galleys, getting CIP data, book layout, printers, listing with publishing houses and listing with online bookstores.

There are several items that set this book apart from similar titles. One is the thoroughness of the information on how to create the impression that you are a large publisher and not a self-published author. In fact, it walks the reader through the process of becoming a publishing house from beginning to end. How detailed is the information? For example, the discussion on how to get an ISBN details not only how to apply and the cost, but also what each section of an ISBN number means and how that affects the impression your book makes. Buying a small block of just ten ISBNs makes you appear to be a small publisher of only two or three books (since hardcover and softcover, audio versions, and new editions all require their own ISBN). How will anyone know that you just purchased ten ISBN numbers? Actually the ISBN number gives that information. The second set of numbers in the ISBN is five, six, or seven digits long. If it is five then you purchased a thousand ISBN numbers. If it is six then you purchased a hundred ISBN numbers. If it is seven digits then you purchased ten ISBN numbers.

Another example of the way this book differs from similar titles is the tremendous amount of detailed, step-by-step information. This is a cookbook approach on how to become a publisher. As a result, you can feel confident that if you follow the directions you will get the same results every time. Unlike most other similar books, the author not only instructs you on what to do but also provides all the necessary details to actually complete the task. For example, when discussing Print-On-Demand options for printing your books Fern Reiss supplies the names and contact information for several reputable firms. This pattern is followed throughout the book and makes it well worth the price just for the detailed contact information.

This is one of the best books available on the subject of becoming an independent publisher. "The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days" is a highly recommended resource for anyone looking to become an independent book publisher, publish their own titles, or just wanting an comprehensive inside look at the publishing market for the small press.

One of the best self publishing books I've ever read
I teach at over a dozen writers conferences a year. I write books for writers. I am on nine writer email discussion lists. In each area where I interact with writers I find those who want to have written a book. They don't make the time, don't do the research, and they don't have a plan. The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days by Fern Reiss is a book I will recommend often because it is a plan complete with all the details needed to make the dream of finishing a book a reality.

The step-by-step approach is great for someone who has trouble staying on task. It's also perfect for anyone who wants the correct information in one place. It's obvious that Reiss knows the publishing business and aspiring authors would do wise to follow her lead.

This is an excellent guide for those who want to write a book and become their own publisher. The book assumes the reader knows how to write so it doesn't get into the actual writing of the book, This book also seems to be more geared to those writing non fiction. The book is more user-friendly than any book on self publishing I've come across. Reiss has done a wonderful job of pulling together information on every possible area of self publishing and anyone who is serious about the publishing game would be smart to run to the nearest outlet, online or brick and mortar, and buy a copy.

Great Resource For Self-Publishers
"The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days" by Fern Reiss gives readers a step-by-step guide to self-publishing their books. For each day of 30 days, "The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days" shows the reader the tasks necessary to set up a successful publishing company and turn a manuscript into a published book.

Some of the first days have a modest and fun agenda, such as Day 2, in which you "zero-in on a hot topic...define your target audience, and choose a title and subtitle for your book."

Many of the other days have a more ambitious agenda, such as choosing and setting up a business structure or setting up a database/accounting system to monitor book sales.

For each day's plan, Reiss gives valuable resources and options. Options range from low-cost, do-it-yourself self-publishing to more professional, mid-sized publisher alternatives.

For example, in setting up a record-keeping system, the options Reiss covers range from $10,000 specialized database programs for mid-sized publishers to $100 accounting programs for smaller publishers to buying a notebook and recording sales in a paper journal.

For setting up a promotional website, "The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days" lists resources to help those who want to learn to do-it-themselves at low cost. Website programs sponsored by the Writer's Guild to help authors are mentioned. And, for those with larger budgets, references to professional website designers are given.

Any self-publisher should find an option within his/her publishing budget in this book. The main focus of "The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days" is not book marketing, but rather getting a book produced and getting a new publishing company established.

Many business aspects of starting a publishing company, which tend to be neglected in other self-publishing books, are discussed. For example, there is an excellent discussion about distributor bankruptcy and how to protect your small publishing company if your exclusive distributor fails. (A small publisher could lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in inventory stored at the distributor during a distributor bankruptcy and never receive payment for it if they don't protect themselves properly. Yet, the topic is usually absent in self-publishing books.)

Other days' effort involve many smaller, but necessary tasks, such as letting the major book buyers know about your titles by filling out the ABI Books In Print form and similar forms.

Book pricing and discount schedules, getting an 800 phone number, setting up a merchant credit card account to process credit cards, book cover design, interior book design, book indexing, publisher's liability insurance, and many other topics are covered.

If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to self-publishing a book, I highly recommend "The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days." This book is very well-organized and is an excellent choice for instructors looking for a course book to teach self-publishing in community colleges, universities, workshops, etc.
